H&R Johnson was famous for producing specialized "one-colour" majolica tiles. These featured heavily translucent, highly fluid single-colour glazes (such as rich greens, deep ambers, or blues) pooled over crisp, moulded Art Nouveau floral borders or geometric shapes to give the pattern a spectacular sense of visual depth. They were commonly used as decorative fireplace inserts or washstand splashbacks
